BELGRADE TRAVEL GUIDE

The Best Things to Do in Belgrade

Belgrade's must-sees, local favourites and the day trip most visitors miss — from the Mad Max Quads crew.

Belgrade is one of Europe's most underrated capitals — a riverside city where empires collided, the food is hearty and the nightlife is the stuff of legend. If you're wondering what to do in Belgrade, here are the best things to do — from the city's must-see attractions to local favourites, plus one adventure most visitors never hear about.

1. Kalemegdan & Belgrade Fortress

Start where the Sava meets the Danube. Belgrade's ancient fortress and the sprawling Kalemegdan park offer ramparts, museums, river views and sunsets locals have enjoyed for centuries — and it's free to wander.

2. Knez Mihailova Street

Belgrade's grand pedestrian promenade runs from the fortress into the centre, lined with 19th-century facades, shops, bookstores and street performers. It's the city's living room — ideal for a coffee and people-watching.

3. Skadarlija (the Bohemian Quarter)

This cobblestoned street is Belgrade's answer to Montmartre. Its traditional kafanas serve hearty Serbian food and live tamburica music late into the night.

4. Temple of Saint Sava

One of the largest Orthodox churches in the world dominates the Vračar skyline. The recently finished mosaic interior, glittering in gold, is genuinely breathtaking.

5. Ada Ciganlija

Locals call it 'Belgrade's sea' — a river island turned lake-beach with swimming, kayaking, cycling and cafés. In summer it's where the whole city cools off.

6. Zemun & the Gardoš Tower

Once a separate town, Zemun keeps its own Austro-Hungarian charm. Climb the Gardoš Tower for panoramic views, then eat fresh fish along the Danube quay.

7. The Splav Clubs

Belgrade's reputation as a party capital is earned on the splavovi — floating clubs moored along the rivers. From techno to live folk, the night runs until sunrise.

8. Nikola Tesla Museum

Serbia's most famous inventor gets a compact, hands-on museum with working demonstrations of his coils and inventions — and Tesla's own ashes, held in a golden orb.

9. Savamala & Beton Hala

The riverfront district mixes street art, galleries and some of the city's best restaurants in converted warehouses along the Sava — great by day, livelier by night.
