Belgrade sits right at the heart of Serbia, which makes it a perfect base for exploring. Within an hour or two you can stand on a Danube fortress, wander baroque towns, taste wine on monastery hillsides — or swap the city for open trails on a quad bike. Here are the best day trips from Belgrade, with rough drive times and what makes each one worth the journey.

1. Novi Sad & Petrovaradin Fortress
About an hour north, Serbia's relaxed second city pairs a charming pedestrian centre with the mighty Petrovaradin Fortress across the Danube — the 'Gibraltar of the Danube' and home of the EXIT festival. Climb the ramparts for the famous outsized clock tower and sweeping river views.
2. Fruška Gora & Its Monasteries
Just beyond Novi Sad, this forested ridge shelters sixteen Orthodox monasteries among vineyards and walking trails. It is the green lung of Vojvodina — ideal for a slow drive between cellars, churches and viewpoints.
3. Sremski Karlovci
A tiny baroque jewel at the foot of Fruška Gora, with an ornate cathedral, the Four Lions fountain and centuries-old wine cellars. Try the local Bermet, a spiced dessert wine once served on the Titanic.
4. Smederevo Fortress
Forty-five minutes east on the Danube stands one of the largest lowland fortresses in Europe. Built in the 15th century, its vast walls and watchtowers are spectacular to wander — and free to explore.
5. Viminacium (the Roman City)
Near Požarevac lie the excavated remains of a Roman legionary fort and city, complete with a mausoleum, Roman baths and the skeleton of a mammoth found on site. A remarkable, under-visited slice of ancient history.

6. Oplenac & Topola
An hour south, the Karađorđević royal mausoleum — St. George's Church — dazzles with interiors covered in millions of mosaic tiles copying Serbia's great medieval frescoes. The surrounding hills are prime wine country.
7. Golubac Fortress & the Iron Gates
Where the Danube narrows into the dramatic Đerdap gorge, the beautifully restored Golubac Fortress guards the river with its row of towers. The drive along the Iron Gates is one of the most scenic in Serbia.
8. Bela Crkva — Lakes & a Guided Quad Adventure
About 1.5 hours south-east, the lake town of Bela Crkva is where a day trip turns into a proper adventure. Mad Max Quads runs fully guided quad tours across crystal lakes, rivers, sand and hills — all gear included, no experience needed. It is the one day trip from Belgrade where you do not just look at the scenery, you tear through it.
